Demystifying Automotive Starter Types, Components, and Their Distinctions

1️⃣  Armature: 

The armature is the rotating part of the starter, typically constructed with steel laminations and slots for winding formation.


2️⃣  Field Coils: 

The field coils are electromagnets surrounding the armature. When current flows through them, they create a magnetic field that induces rotation in the armature.


3️⃣  Flywheel: 

The flywheel is a disc-like component mounted on the engine's crankshaft. It engages with the pinion gear (starter's drive gear) to start the engine.


4️⃣Pinion Gear: 

The pinion gear is the component that connects the starter to the engine. It transmits the rotational force from the armature to the engine's flywheel, initiating engine start-up.


Distinctions between Different Types:

1️⃣  Technology: 

Conventional starters use DC motor technology, while brushless starters employ brushless DC motor technology, and start-stop system starters are designed for fuel-saving purposes.


2️⃣  Efficiency: 

Brushless starters offer higher efficiency compared to conventional starters, as they reduce energy losses and friction.


3️⃣  Lifespan: 

Brushless starters generally have a longer lifespan due to their design that minimizes wear and wear-related failures.


4️⃣  Functionality: 

Start-stop system starters automatically shut down the engine during idle periods to save fuel, making them suitable for vehicles that require frequent engine starts.
